An eighth-century Tang emperor named mountainous Yunnan province, which literally means “south of the clouds.” As the Rockies represent an American frontier, so is this China's "last frontier". Also dubbed the " Land of Great Corrugations " because three major rivers (Salween, Mekong and Yangtze) flow through its western borderlands, today Yunnan is unspoiled China at its best, featuring lovely cities, gorgeous terrain and the most diverse population in all of China, including Tibetans, Yi, Naxi and Bai. Our journey includes Shangri La (the seat of Tibetan Buddhism in Yunnan), the precipitous Tiger Leaping Gorge, timelss Dali and the enchanting Li River Valley. We’ll visit colorful pagodas, temples and villages of humble log cabins – and sample the best regional cuisine in the country.
