Sheltered from the outside world by high mountains, difficult passes and political restrictions, the Dolpo region of Nepal is an enclave of southern Tibetan tribes who still reside (some say) in the 8th century. Snow Lion Expeditions has pioneered treks into the Tibetan borderlands since 1992 and is among the few companies equipped to operate in this remote area. Under the luminous faces of snow-veiled peaks, we pass through forested lower elevations surrounding Phoksundo Lake into the arid and dramatic upper valleys extending southward from Tibet. We will trek alongside nomads and farmers herding their pack animals past haunting chortens that stand like sentinels in the wilderness. By night, we’ll set up camp alongside the medieval stone homes of the inquisitive and hospitable villagers.
