Join in the vibrant springtime celebration as the Bhutanese gather for Ura Yakchoe Festival. Traveling eastward to Ura village, our route crosses Dochula Pass (10,000’), from which over 200 miles of Himalayan summits are visible. After our descent from the pass, we pause at Punakha Dzong, the most acclaimed architectural and artistic masterpiece of the Dragon Kingdom, and hike to Khamsum Yuley Namgyal Chorten stupa, which displays some of Bhutan’s best Tantric Buddhist art. We witness the imparting of moral lessons and the animation of ancient tales in the elaborately staged and choreographed dances of the Ura Yakchoe Festival. After the festival we will visit the capital city of Thimphu, where, from our centrally-located hotel you may choose from a variety of pursuits: the weekend market, archery (Bhutan’s national sport), the zoo, the Memorial Chorten, and a wide variety of handicraft workshops and stores.
