Arriving aboard the ultramodern, high-elevation railroad into the ancient kingdom of Tibet, we experience one of the most beguiling and beautiful places in the world. We arrive at the new Lhasa Railway Station in Tibet’s capital and largest city. It is the home of the Potala Palace––one of the wonders of Eastern architecture and the residence of the Dalai Lamas until 1959. We visit Barkhor Market and the adjacent Jokhang Temple which has been continually used for worship since 642. This is the spiritual heart of Tibet, where we meet pilgrims from all over the world. We continue to Gyantse via beautiful Yamdruk Tso (lake). The last stop is Shigatse, Tibet’s second city and site of Tashilhunpo, the largest active monastery in the autonomous region.
