A tiny wedge of land in between Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet, Sikkim was once an independent Buddhist kingdom until it was annexed by India in 1966. The kingdom's most majestic and auspicious trek leads to the base of Kanchenjunga, the world's third highest summit. The 10-day round trip trek from Yoksum traverses terrain of enchanted forests and winds through habitats for countless species of birds, butterflies and orchids. Once at the Goecha La (16,500'), sacred Kanchenjunga looms above prayer flags fluttering in the breeze for the salvation of all sentient beings. In this Google Earth view of Kanchenjunga, taken from 17 miles above the earth, you can see the towering massif along the Sikkim-Nepal border with the Nepal-Tibet running perpendicular beyond the Kanchenjunga which straddles Makalu, Lhotse and Everest. In the spring, this route is a spectacle of fragrance and color. A highlight of the trip will be the day we spend tasting teas at a plantation near Darjeeling.
