History weighs heavily on Vietnam.  For more than a decade, reportage of the Vietnam War portrayed it as a savage netherworld.  Yet, 31 years after the war's end, this resilient country has emerged from the shadows.  Word is out that this is a land of shimmering paddy-fields and sugar-white beaches, full-tilt cities and venerable pagodas. The speed with which Vietnam's population of 79 million has been able to transcend the recent past comes as no surprise to visitors who are met with warmth and curiosity rather than resentment and war fatigue.  Hanoi has served as Vietnam's capital for close on a thousand years and is a city of pagodas and dynastic temples.  Life proceeds, at least for now, at a  gentler pace than in Ho Chi Minh City.  From Hanoi most visitors strike out east to the labyrinth of limestone outcrops in Halong Bay or to the mountain regions of Sapa close to the Chinese frontier.  For the majority of visitors, the furiously commercial southern metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City provides a head-spinning introduction.  A trip out into the rice fields and orchards of the nearby Mekong Delta makes a welcome next stop.  Up the coast, the ancient sea port of Hoi An, the former imperial capital of Hue and the idyllic beach resort of Na Trang have been favorite haunts since the French first colonized this enchanting country.
